Short answer
There is no single price for Invisalign. Each provider sets its own fee, and it mainly depends on how complex your bite is, how many aligners the plan needs, whether refinements and retainers are included, and the check-ups along the way. A consultation with a scan is the only way to get a written figure for your teeth.
Key takeaways
- Your provider sets the fee, based mostly on how complex your case is and how many aligners it needs.
- Refinement aligners and retainers are the two items most often left out of a headline figure. Ask about both.
- Health funds may pay part of the cost if your extras cover includes orthodontics, usually after a waiting period and up to a lifetime limit.
- Payment plans spread the cost, but compare the total you will pay, not just the instalment.
- A written plan after a scan is the only quote worth comparing. Anything less is a guess.

Why Invisalign has no fixed price in Australia
If you have searched for a price and found figures that do not agree with each other, that is not a coincidence. Invisalign does not publish a standard fee for patients. Align Technology, the company that makes the aligners, says on its Australian cost page that each trained provider determines the cost themselves, because each smile is different.
In practice that means the number you are quoted depends on two things: what your teeth need, and what the quote includes. Two people sitting in the same waiting room in Burwood can reasonably be quoted different amounts, because one needs a few front teeth nudged into line and the other needs their whole bite corrected.
So instead of a price list, this guide explains what actually moves the figure up or down, what a fair quote should spell out, and where health funds and paying over time fit in. That way, when you do get a number, you will know what you are looking at.
Why we do not publish a figure here
Any number in a general article would be wrong for most readers. A fee only means something once a dentist has examined your teeth and written down exactly what the plan includes.
What changes the cost of Invisalign treatment
According to Invisalign’s own description of the process, treatment starts with a scan, moves through a series of aligners with regular check-ups, and finishes with a retainer. Each of those stages carries a cost, and each one varies from person to person.
| Cost driver | Why it changes the fee | What to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Case complexity | Crowding, gaps, bite problems and rotated teeth take different amounts of planning and time to correct. | Is my case simple, moderate or complex, and why? |
| Number of aligners | More tooth movement usually means more aligners in the series and a longer treatment. | Roughly how many aligners does my plan need? |
| Refinement aligners | Teeth do not always follow the digital plan exactly, so extra aligners are sometimes needed near the end. | Are refinements included, and is there a limit? |
| Retainers | Every orthodontic result needs holding in place afterwards, and retainers wear out or get lost. | Is the first retainer included? What do replacements involve? |
| Appointments | Check-ups monitor progress and catch problems early. | How many reviews are included, and over how long? |
| Other dental work | Decay or gum problems need treating before teeth are moved. | Will I need anything done before we start? |
How case complexity affects the price of Invisalign
Complexity is the biggest single driver. Closing a small gap between two front teeth is a very different job from correcting a deep overbite or a crossbite where the back teeth do not meet properly. More complex movements need more careful planning, more aligners and more time, and Invisalign’s own guidance names complexity and the number of aligners as the two factors your provider uses to set the fee.
Complexity is also why a figure from a friend, or from another clinic’s website, tells you very little about your own teeth.
Why refinement aligners can add to the cost of Invisalign
Aligner treatment is planned digitally, but teeth are living tissue and do not always move exactly as the plan predicts. A 2020 study in the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics compared planned and achieved tooth positions in 38 patients and found the mean accuracy across all tooth movements was 50%. Rotations were the least predictable movement at 46%.
That does not mean the treatment fails half the time. It means a plan often needs adjusting along the way, usually with an extra set of refinement aligners. Whether those are built into your fee, or charged separately, can make a real difference to the total.
Retainers after Invisalign: an ongoing cost to plan for
Once your teeth are where they should be, they need holding there. Invisalign’s own guidance is that, like braces, you will need to wear a retainer when treatment finishes. A Cochrane review updated in 2023, covering 47 studies and 4,377 participants, explains that without a phase of retention, teeth tend to relapse towards where they started. The same review counts retainers that break, wear out, stop fitting or get lost as retainer failures, which is a useful reminder that a retainer is not a one-off purchase.
Check-ups and monitoring during aligner treatment
Your dentist will schedule regular reviews to check the aligners fit and your teeth are tracking to plan. Ask how many are included in the fee and over what period, so a longer than expected treatment does not bring surprise charges.
What a fair Invisalign quote should include
A quote is only comparable with another quote if both cover the same things. Before you sign anything, it is reasonable to ask for a written treatment plan that answers each of these points.
- The diagnosis. What the dentist found, in plain language, and what the treatment is aiming to correct.
- The scan and records. Whether the consultation, scan and any X-rays are charged separately or counted towards treatment.
- The aligners. An estimate of how many aligners and how long treatment is expected to take.
- Refinements. Whether additional aligners are included if your teeth need adjusting, and any limit on them.
- Retainers. Whether your first retainers are included, and what replacements involve.
- Reviews. How many check-ups are covered, and what happens if treatment runs longer.
- Other treatment. Any fillings, cleaning or gum care needed before aligners start, priced separately.
- Payment terms. When payments fall due, and what happens if you stop treatment early.
Compare like with like
A lower headline figure that leaves out refinements and retainers can end up costing more than a higher one that includes them. Line the written plans up side by side before deciding.

Does private health insurance cover Invisalign?
Sometimes, in part. Invisalign is orthodontic treatment, so whether your fund contributes depends on whether your extras cover includes orthodontics. Invisalign’s cost page notes that many health insurance plans treat aligners the same way they treat braces, and that there is often a lifetime cap on what the fund will pay for orthodontic treatment. healthdirect puts it simply: if you have health insurance, it may cover some of your costs.
Timing matters too. The government’s private health information service explains that extras waiting periods are set by each insurer, and that for major items such as orthodontics they are generally 12 months or more. If you are thinking about Invisalign next year, check your cover now.
- Is orthodontics included on my extras policy, or only general and major dental?
- What is the waiting period for orthodontics, and have I served it?
- What is the annual limit and the lifetime limit for orthodontic treatment?
- How is the benefit paid: in one claim at the start, or spread over the treatment?
- Which item numbers will the practice use, so I can get an exact benefit from the fund?
Paying for Invisalign over time
Because Invisalign treatment runs over months, many people prefer to spread the cost. We offer payment plans, and the options are set out on that page. Ask about them at your consultation so the plan and the payments are agreed together.
Whatever option you use, work out the total you will pay, including any fees, rather than only looking at the regular instalment. Invisalign’s own advice on third party finance is to read the fine print and seek financial advice if you need it, which is sensible for any health spending.
Invisalign compared with braces and other options on cost
Invisalign is one way to straighten teeth, not the only one. Fixed braces, either metal or clear ceramic, are the other main form of orthodontic treatment, and healthdirect describes both braces and aligners as ways to straighten crooked teeth or correct bite problems. It also notes that aligners are clear but not invisible, which is worth knowing if discretion is the main reason you are paying for them.
For some people, the concern is not really the position of the teeth at all. A small chip or a gap between front teeth can sometimes be changed with composite bonding or dental veneers instead, which alter the shape of teeth rather than moving them. Whether that is appropriate depends on your bite, and it is a conversation for the consultation rather than a decision to make from a price comparison.
| Option | What it involves | What mainly drives the cost |
|---|---|---|
| Invisalign | A series of removable clear aligners, changed as teeth move, then a retainer. | Complexity, number of aligners, refinements, retainers, reviews. |
| Metal braces | Brackets and wires fixed to the teeth and adjusted at regular visits, then a retainer. | Complexity, length of treatment, number of adjustment visits, retainers. |
| Clear ceramic braces | Fixed braces with tooth coloured brackets, adjusted at regular visits, then a retainer. | As for metal braces, plus the bracket material. |
| Bonding or veneers | Changes the shape or colour of teeth. Does not move them or correct a bite. | Number of teeth treated and the material used. |
Why wearing aligners as directed protects what you pay
Aligners only work while they are in your mouth. Wearing them for fewer hours than your dentist prescribes slows progress, can mean the next aligner does not fit, and is one of the reasons a plan ends up needing extra refinements or extra time.
Hygiene matters for the same reason. healthdirect warns that poor cleaning during orthodontic treatment can lead to white spots on the teeth or tooth decay, and decay found mid treatment has to be dealt with before aligners can carry on. Brushing before you put aligners back in is a small habit that protects a large investment.
Finally, the retainer. healthdirect notes that you might only need to wear a retainer at night, or it might need to be worn all the time, depending on your case. Following those instructions is what keeps the result you paid for.
Who provides Invisalign in Burwood, and does it change the price?
Invisalign aligners are not sold to the public. They are custom made devices prescribed and supplied only by an orthodontist or a dentist who has completed Invisalign training, according to Invisalign Australia. healthdirect explains that orthodontists carry out these treatments, and that many general dentists also provide some orthodontic treatments.
At our practice, Invisalign is provided by our general dentists. If you are looking for a dentist in Burwood for Invisalign, the useful questions are the same wherever you go: who will plan and supervise my treatment, how often will I be seen, and what happens if my teeth do not track as planned? For some complex bites, seeing an orthodontist can be the right step, and a good provider will tell you when that is the case.
How to get an accurate Invisalign price for your teeth
The only Invisalign price worth planning around is one written for your mouth. Here is how that usually works.
- Book a consultation. Mention that you are interested in Invisalign so enough time is set aside.
- Have your teeth examined and scanned. The dentist checks your teeth, gums and bite, and a digital scan records where your teeth are now.
- Talk through the options. That includes aligners, braces, and whether treatment is needed at all.
- Get the plan in writing. Use the checklist above to make sure it covers refinements, retainers and reviews.
- Check your health fund. Ask for the item numbers so your fund can tell you what it will pay.
- Take your time. You do not have to decide on the day, and you are welcome to get a second opinion.
What you should know about the risks
Like all orthodontic treatment, Invisalign carries risks. Early on, teeth can ache and aligner edges can cause scratches or ulcers inside the mouth. Poor cleaning while wearing aligners can lead to white spots or tooth decay, and teeth tend to move back if retainers are not worn as directed. Poorly planned or unsupervised orthodontic treatment can damage teeth, gums and jaw joints. Individual results vary, and not every bite is suited to aligners. Fixed braces, cosmetic options for minor concerns, or no treatment at all are alternatives. Suitability depends on a clinical assessment, and you are welcome to seek a second opinion. Frequently asked questions
How much does Invisalign cost in Sydney?
There is no standard fee. Each Invisalign provider sets their own, based mainly on how complex your case is and how many aligners you need, plus what the quote includes, such as refinements, retainers and check-ups. A consultation with a scan and a written plan is the only way to get an accurate figure for your teeth.
Is Invisalign more expensive than braces?
It depends on the case and the provider. Both are priced on complexity and length of treatment, so the difference for one person can be quite different from another. The fairest comparison is two written plans for your own teeth that cover the same things, including retainers and reviews.
Are retainers included in the cost of Invisalign?
Sometimes, but not always. Everyone needs a retainer after orthodontic treatment, so ask whether your first retainers are included in the fee and what replacing a lost or worn retainer would involve.
Can I claim Invisalign on my health fund?
You may be able to if your extras cover includes orthodontics. Funds usually apply a waiting period, often 12 months or more for orthodontics, and an annual or lifetime limit. Ask the practice for the item numbers, then ask your fund what it will pay.
Why is my Invisalign quote different from a friend’s?
Because the fee reflects your teeth, not a set product price. A few crooked front teeth and a full bite correction need very different numbers of aligners and amounts of time, and two quotes may also include different things.
Can I pay for Invisalign in instalments?
Many practices offer ways to spread the cost, and we have payment plans available. Compare the total amount payable, including any fees, rather than just the regular payment.
In short
Invisalign has no single price because each provider sets a fee for your specific teeth. The figure depends on complexity and the number of aligners, and on whether refinements, retainers and reviews are included.
- Ask for a written plan after a scan, and compare quotes that cover the same things.
- Check whether refinement aligners and retainers are in the fee.
- Check your extras cover for orthodontics, its waiting period and its limits.
- Look at the total payable on any payment plan, not just the instalment.
- Wear aligners and retainers as directed to protect what you have paid for.
